QUESTIONING WORRY AND REPETITION

THE QUESTION

What am I doing when I return to the same worry again?

A worry can return.

Sometimes something has changed.

Sometimes new information has appeared.

Sometimes I reconsider the Question and see something I did not see before.

And sometimes I return to what appears to be the same place.

Questioning repetition does not require me to decide that I should stop thinking about something that matters.

It allows me to notice what is happening each time I return.

A QUESTION TO HOLD

What has changed since the last time I was here?

BEGIN WHERE SOMETHING GETS YOUR ATTENTION.

You do not have to answer every Question.

  • Has an answer changed?
  • Has anything happened that requires me to reconsider?

  • What is exactly the same?

WHAT AM I DOING WITH IT THIS TIME?

  • Am I looking for something I missed?
  • Am I trying to reach a different answer?
  • Am I checking whether the previous answer is still true?
  • Am I trying to make the uncertainty disappear?
  • Am I imagining the same future again?
  • Am I preparing for something new?
  • Am I repeating something I have already done?

WHAT KEEPS REOPENING?

  • Did I ever consider the Question answered?
  • What made the answer stop feeling sufficient?
  • Did new information reopen it?
  • Did uncertainty reopen it?
  • Did another Human reopen it?
  • Did a System reopen it?
  • Did I encounter something that reminded me of it?
  • Am I treating the return of worry as evidence that something remains unresolved?
  • Does the worry returning necessarily mean the Question needs another answer?
  • What am I hoping will be different if I think about it again?

WHEN THE QUESTION REMAINS OPEN

  • Does every open Question require an answer now?
  • Does every unanswered Question require my attention now?
  • Can something remain uncertain without my continuing to work on it?
  • Can a Question remain open while I do something else?
  • What would happen if I allowed this Question to remain unanswered for now?
  • What do I believe I would risk by leaving it alone?
  • What am I afraid I might miss?
  • What responsibility do I believe continued thinking fulfills?
  • When does returning reveal something new?
  • When does returning bring me back to what I already know?

QUESTION TO GO FURTHER

Can a Question remain open without my continuously working on it?

IF I RETURN AGAIN

  • What would make returning useful?
  • What new information would matter?
  • What change in circumstances would matter?
  • What new Question might deserve attention?
  • What have I already Questioned?
  • What answer have I already received?
  • What have I already decided?
  • What remains undecided?
  • What remains unknowable for now?
  • What am I expecting repetition to resolve?
  • Is there something I can leave unfinished?
  • What would allow me to recognize that I am encountering something genuinely new?

SELF

What do I tell myself when the same worry returns?

Do I treat its return as evidence that I missed something?

What do I expect myself to resolve before I allow my attention to move elsewhere?

SYSTEMS

What does a System invite or require me to keep checking?

What updates, alerts, statuses, deadlines, measurements, or changing information repeatedly bring the Question back?

When does checking provide new information—and when does the System simply make another check available?

SOCIETY

What have I learned about staying concerned?

When is continued attention treated as evidence that I care, am responsible, or am taking something seriously?

When does Society encourage me to remain engaged with a Question even when nothing new has occurred?

RETURN TO THE QUESTION

  • What am I doing when I return to the same worry again?
  • What changed since the last time?
  • What did not change?
  • Is there something new to Question?
  • Can anything remain unanswered for now?
  • What would make returning useful?
  • What remains a Question?

What does this reveal about Being Human?

Answers can come from anywhere. Questioning remains yours.
